How Did You Get Started In Health And Fitness?

I was ranked 5th in the world for competitive cheerleading growing up, so fitness and conditioning was always a huge focus in my life. I picked up bodybuilding and bikini competitions after a few years of retiring from cheerleading. I became a certified personal trainer, helping train others but I always was fascinated by how I could transform my own body. After I saw my first show at the LA fit Expo in 2011, I was hooked.
 

What Is Your Best Accomplishment So Far? Proudest Moment?

Winning 2nd at the Tijuana Pro in my third pro show ever was quite a big moment for me. Not because of the placing but because the two weekends before that I had made my pro debut and did not place at all. However I didn’t give up and did my second pro show the weekend after and moved up to 7th. Next weekend I was just shy of winning. Proof you can do anything if you never give up :)

What Is It Like Competing?

Fun, nerve racking, long. Haha I love being on stage. Like I said, I grew up competing in front of audiences so I naturally feel in the zone. I’m a competitive person but what I love about bodybuilding its not all about how you perform on that day but how hard you’ve worked UP to that day!

AMT machine. Highest resistance, taking small backwards steps only using glutes and hamstrings
 

What Is Your Diet Like?

 

  • Meal 1: 1 cup egg whites, 1egg, 1/2 cup oats
  • Meal 2: 6oz tilapia asparagus 1/4 cup rice
  • Meal 3: 3 chicken 1/4 cup rice
  • Meal 4: 6oz fish 1/4 cup rice asparagus
  • Meal 5: 3 oz chicken large salad and mixed veggies
  • When I’m in prep. Generally stay around this type of plan but am a little more relaxed on weighing out food, adding sodium, unlimited veggies and about 35g more fats to get my calories up.

What Are Your Tips For Success For Beginners?

Work with a nutritionist to get your diet costumized. Everyone is different and not the same diet works for everyone. Don’t waste your time in the gym without having the proper diet or be ready to see slow results. Also, always have your workouts mapped out for the week. Keeps you motivated to go to the gym if you have a plan and hold you accountable to pushing yourself through the whole workout and breaking the habit of just stopping when you get tired.
 

What Is The Best Advice You Have Ever Been Given?

Be patient. You won’t be perfect in the beginning but you got to keep getting back on track when you fall down. Don’t make excuses for yourself and never give up on yourself. Use self affirmations and be your own best supporter.

Did You Make Any Mistakes When You First Started Out?

Oh my gosh yes. The list goes on. I tried limiting calories but not eating the right macros. I did cardio to try and undo a bad eating day, as punishment. I ran too much and forgot about weights. I barely ate during the day and binged at night. I didn’t have a plan in the gym when I worked out I just wandered from machine to machine. I didn’t mainly use free weights. I never did plyometrics. I worked out because I disliked my body instead of loving it. The list goes on lol
 

What’s Your Favorite Exercises For Developing That ‘Booty’?

Anything that isolates the glues and hamstrings! The key is to switch it up and really mind to muscle focus. Bulgarian lunges, single leg pistol squats, stiff leg dead lifts, donkey cable kicks, lying down hamstring curls, kurtsey lunges, bands step togethers (some of these are mapped out how to do on the fitbodyyradio YouTube channel)
 

 

What Are Your Favorite Ab Exercises?

Yikes. My least favorite. I just do stability ball crunches, hanging ab crunches and decline bench sit ups
 

Your Best Tips To Getting Into Contest Shape/Losing Those Last Few Pounds?

Cutting down portions and adding 30 minutes of HIIT cardio in the mornings and at night.

Funniest Moment In The Gym?

I realized my leggings were see through on my last set of a really long leg day. I’m sure everyone got a nice view. So embarrassing but I couldn’t do anything but laugh at that point ;P
 

Where Does Your Motivation Come From?

Myself. I’m very competitive and believe in myself 100%. I get motivation from the web and coaching my own competitors but at the end of the day I rely on myself to keep me going. It’s me vs me, and it’s really the only thing you are truly in control of.

My Top 5 Silly Season Health & Fitness Tips!

You guessed it! Christmas has come around again, and so quickly! I get a lot of clients asking how to keeping healthy over the month of December. So many parties, lunches & dinners and of course drinking… I thought it would be good to share my top 5 tips and hopefully help some of you with a few ideas. Here we go…
 

1. Don’t Skip Meals

It’s so easy to skip meals over Christmas in an effort to balance out these delicious dinners and party events. Skipping meals during the day and overeating at an event simply doesn’t work. We want to keep our metabolism working without messing with our blood sugar levels. My advice, eat lighter meals throughout the day, but never skip one!
 

2. Eat Before An Event

We’ve all been there before. You rock up to party event and there you are, eyeing out the cocktail waiters for the canapés or something to eat! When the food comes out we find ourselves eating anything we can get our hands on, and let’s face it, it’s good and bad at the same time. Your best chance to avoid feeling hungry is to simply eat at home before you leave. After all, summer has only just started!
 

3. Move It Or Lose It?

Keep on moving! Christmas is a time where we should be allowed to let our hair down a little and enjoy the things we love. Problem is a lot of people tend to completely drop off with exercise, yet we eating and drinking more than usual. I love to get up early and get all of my training done in the morning before a night out. You feel so much better and it’s out of the way before your day starts!
 

4. It’s OK To Say No

So you have the next 4 weekends filled with invitations to Christmas parties and a heap of lunch & dinner events. You don’t have to attend every single one of them. Pick out the important ones to go to, its ok to say no. Give yourself a bit of break from all the food and alcohol.
 

5. Drink Plenty Of Water

I have a rule. If I decided to drink at an event, every second drink is a glass of water. It’s so important to keep ourselves hydrated while flushing out those toxins. Increase your water intake by at least 1-2 litres a day on a Christmas party night out. Your head will thank you in the morning, especially if drinking is something you don’t generally do.

4 Amazing Tips For Getting Big Weight Loss Results With Little Time!

Busy? Me too!

We’re all busy & some days we just can’t work out for a full hour. But that doesn’t mean we have to hit a stand still. When your schedule gets hectic, use these four simple tips to stay on track & keep seeing results.
 

1. Stay Active!

Find small things you can do throughout the day to keep moving & burn calories. Take the stairs. Park in the last row. Go for a walk during your break. Take your bike instead of the car. All these little activities will add up big! I promise!
 

2. HIIT It!

If you only have 15-20 minutes to spare, go with a HIIT workout. These are short & intense intervals that will get you the most out of your workout. Your metabolism will increase & you’ll burn more fat than a traditional workout. Just be sure to space them out throughout the week. You should never do a HIIT workout more than 3-4 times a week & never on back to back days. Your body needs time to recover.
 

3. Eat Clean!

The best way to see serious results is to clean up your nutrition. Choose fresh, unprocessed foods 80-90% of the time. Lean meats, fruits, veggies, & good carbs are all excellent choices. Drink your water & allow yourself a small splurge from time to time. It will help you stick with your eating plan long term.
 

4. Plan Ahead!

When we are busy, we are more likely to grab whatever is quick & convenient – not usually the healthiest choice. Dedicate some time on Saturday or Sunday to planning out your meals for the upcoming week. Prepare as much as you can in advance. I clean, chop, & bag all of my fruit & vegetables ahead of time. I also cook a few meals & refrigerate/freeze them for later. Set yourself up for success!

Don’t feel frustrated or take time off when things get busy. Stay focused on your goals & use these tips to keep right on going!

How Did You Get Started In Health and Fitness?

My husband’s clean eating and weight training transformation inspired me to change my life. I watched him transform but it wasn’t until I was ready that I actually changed my life as well. I finally got “sick & tired” of being “sick & tired”.

I changed my life overnight & I haven’t looked back since. We are now co-owners of a clean eating blog, HeandSheEatClean.com, which helps and inspires thousands of other couples and individuals achieve this lifestyle. So, not only has my transformation changed my life but it has also changed the lives of countless others! I also have a personal fitness blog, WhitneyCarlson.com where I talk about more personal fitness and health related items.

I am now an online health/wellness coach and ISSA-certified personal trainer at a local private fitness studio.
 

What Is Your Best Accomplishment So Far?

While working a high-stress full time job I was able to obtain my personal training certification and also become a lifestyle coach. I am very proud of the fact that I was able to accomplish all of this while working (and commuting two hours each day), still training myself, and preparing our meals!

Another huge accomplish for me has been being able to go on some very intense hiking trips! In September we hiked over 140 miles in Glacier National Park, Yellowstone National Park, and Grand Teton National Park in just 11 short days. Last year we did a lot of hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and Zion National Park. I know that being strong and in top shape has allowed me the opportunity to see some very beautiful places! I can’t wait to see where our next adventure will be!

Can You Tell Us A Little About Your Transformation?

I was never an overweight child or teenager; however, I never stepped foot into a gym until I was in my mid 20s. I married my high school sweetheart and both of us gained 20 lbs during our first year of marriage. We DID belong to a gym during this time we just never used the membership.

I remember when I first started taking advantage of my membership I could only do about 10 minutes on the elliptical until I was completely exhausted and boredom set in and I lost my motivation to stick to a routine. Even though I lost my motivation, my husband continued to follow a strict routine and absorb as much fitness and nutrition information as he could. I was too shy to go to the gym so instead of going with him, I did Jillian Michaels workout videos at home.

It was around this time that I finally realized that counting points or counting calories may help you lose weight but it doesn’t help you actually become HEALTHY. I just “flipped” the switch one day and I have never looked back!
 

How Has It Been Getting Fit With Your Husband, Scott?

It has been very motivating to have a partner who also cares about health and fitness. It is much easier to only have to cook one thing instead of having to make two different meals! We also motivate each other to go to the gym even when we don’t want to!

Is It Easier To Get Fit Together? How Did You Support Each other?

I think it is easier to get fit together! My husband’s clean eating and weight training transformation inspired me to change my life. He has pushed me through the days that I didn’t think that I was going to make it and stood by my side and supported me during the times I wanted to give up. He’s helped me reach my goals and continues to push me to “set the bar higher” and attain even more goals.

My workout routine changes based on my goals but usually looks something like this:

    Barbell Step-Ups: 3 sets of 12-15 reps
    Glute Bridges: 3 sets of 12-15 reps

 

Tuesday: Shoulders/Abs/Cardio

    Arnold Press: 3 sets of 12-15 reps
    Superset with Reverse Crunches: 3 sets of 20 reps

    Side Lateral Raises: 3 sets of 12-15 reps
    Superset with Crunches: 3 sets of 20 reps

    Front Raises: 3 sets of 12-15 reps
    Superset with Decline Bench Crunches: 3 sets of 20 reps-

    Cardio: Incline Walking or the Stairclimber (20-30 min, Medium Intensity)

 

Wednesday: Back/Bis/Cardio

    One Arm Dumbbell Row: 3 sets of 12-15 reps

Top 3 Favourite Exercises and Why?

1. Weighted Step-Ups because it works quads and glutes which are my favorite body parts to train. I also love them because all you need are dumbbells or a weighted bar and an elevated platform – you can do them anywhere!

2. Straight-Leg Deadlifts because it works hamstrings and glutes and I love the way I can feel them immediately! I love leg day.

3. Bicep curls because I love sculpted arms! Plus, you can perform them with dumbbells, a barbell, milk jugs, your animals, etc. No excuses for this arm exercise!
 

What Is Your Diet Like?

I eat six clean meals per day with a balance of protein, complex carbohydrates, fats and a lot of vegetables! I also try to drink a gallon of water per day. I try to eat as healthy as possible but also allow myself to enjoy life by going out to eat without worrying too much about it. I prepare all of our food in advance so that we don’t have any reason to make unhealthy choices during the week. Below is a sample meal plan for me. (Recipes can be found on HeandSheEatClean.com)

What Are Your Tips For Beginners?

Write down all of the positive things about yourself. You must change the way you think about yourself starting today. This journey is VERY mental. You must believe in yourself and know that you can do it.

Also, talk to yourself – yes, LITERALLY talk to yourself! I talk to myself ALL time time. Pizza, cupcakes, brownies, donuts in the breakroom means that I have to tell myself that they aren’t worth it. All that hard work I put in at the gym? All the meals I prepared? I wasn’t going to let that little treat (that meant nothing to me) control me. It works everytime! Save your “treats” for when they mean something (a special occasion, etc) instead of just an everyday office occurrence.
 

How Do You Handle Set Backs & Bad Days?

I just start new at the next meal or training session. Even with the best intensions, not all meals are going to be clean and not all workout sessions going to be at the highest level of intensity. The worst thing to do is binge eat or skip an entire week at the gym because you have already missed a few days. You must pull yourself back up immediately and get it together the next chance you have (next meal, next workout, etc).

Did You Make Any Mistakes When You First Started Out?

I can’t think of any “big” mistakes I made when I first started out. I’m sure that I did not have correct form on some exercises (it took me FOREVER to learn the correct form of a deadlift) and I know that I didn’t train at the intensity that I could have. Through my own experiences and training others, I have learned that people are much stronger than they think!
 

Give Your Best 3 Health Tips That People Can Implement Right Now:

1. Surround yourself with positive people with similar goals
2. Change your routine/workouts periodically (try a new type of training, try a workout from your favorite magazine, or do a workout DVD)
3. Ignore the naysayers
 

Your Best Tips To Getting Into Contest Shape?

I’ve never done a competition only a few photo shoots. I didn’t really diet down for those but instead I chose to consistently eat clean and workout. This way I stay in shape year round but also know what I need to eliminate a few weeks before an event. Things like gum, dairy, and gluten bloat me so before an event I will try to avoid these things and also try to focus on eating more whole foods instead of relying on shakes and bars so much. If someone is just trying to lose those last few pounds I would suggest mixing up their workouts or trying different food combinations to see if the change in routine will spark any additional weight loss.

What’s Your Funniest Moment at the Gym?

When I was pretty new to weight lifting I was changing the weight on the cables and one of the straight bars came down and hit me in the head! I’ve seen it happen a few times since then but no one has gotten hurt that I know of!
 

Where Does Your Motivation Come From?

Part of my motivation comes from not wanting to be “normal”. I’ve never wanted to be “like everyone else” so if “everyone else” is going to sit on the couch and watch TV, I’m not going to do it! I’m also the kind of person where I just decide I am going to do something and I do it. I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. I never had a number (weight) or clothing size in mind. I told my husband that I didn’t want to be “skinny”…I wanted to be “fit”. I wanted people to look at me and be able to tell that I worked for my body. By telling him that I knew that I would hold myself accountable! Tell someone your goals and dreams! I stay motivated now by helping others via our Clean Eating blog (www.HeandSheEatClean.com) and my personal fitness blog (www.WhitneyCarlson.com) – they motivate and inspire me in return! I can’t let them down!

Adam Charlton ‘Adam400m’ Legs Motivation

Killed legs ! Started with 5 minutes warm up on the stair master machine.Then 2 sets of leg extensions , 25 reps . Now I’m warmed up I hit the leg press, 4 sets , 15,12,10 and 8 reps . Last set is a brutal drop down ! I strip a few plates and bang out another 8 reps or to failure .Next is 2 sets of barbell squats DEEP. I pick a weight where I can handle 15 reps but rep out 25 reps . I seriously feel like puking after this and the weight isn’t even crazy heavy !! To finish off I perform 3 sets of walking lunges with a barbell

Leg day ! Keeping it really simple but intense . First i’ll start with Leg extensions , 4 sets , 25,20,15,12 reps .1 minute recovery between sets .Next it’s leg press , 4 sets, 15,12,10 and 8 (last set is a drop set )Last exercise to finish is hack squats , 4 sets , 15,12,10 and 8 reps.

Any typical college student could admit that their life consists of partying, sleep-less nights, drinking, tons of fast food, and crunched for time study sessions. Well, that’s what my life was consisting of, and I wanted change! I was unhappy with who I was becoming and felt I was living a life lacking goals. I was always pretty active growing up and my parents always preached the importance of a fit and healthy life, but that wasn’t enough for me, I needed a stronger push to change my unhealthy life. I knew a few girls who competed in NPC bikini and I decided I was going to enter one. This was where it all began, I went from being skinny fat to winning first place at my first NPC bikini competition.

From there the sky is now the limit for Angelica. Now a sponsored athlete by one of the best supplement companies and looking forward to future competitions, there’s no telling how far she can take this!
